In September 2024, Paonia achieved a significant milestone by being designated as an International Dark Sky Community by DarkSky International. This recognition underscores the town’s dedication to preserving its pristine night skies and reducing light pollution.
Located on Colorado’s Western Slope, Paonia’s high-desert climate offers abundant clear nights, making the Milky Way visible from many areas within the town. The community’s efforts to improve night sky quality have been notable, especially following the decline of the local coal mining industry, which led to reduced artificial lighting from mining operations.
Mayor Paige Smith highlighted the importance of this achievement, stating, “Few people are lucky enough to live beneath a night sky so star-rich, including the most impressive sight by far, the Milky Way. As mayor of Paonia, we are honored to contribute to this important international movement to keep our night skies dark.”
The designation has not only fostered community pride but also attracted astrotourism, drawing visitors eager to experience the town’s exceptional stargazing opportunities. Local organizations, such as Dark Skies Paonia, continue to promote responsible lighting practices and host events to educate residents and visitors about the benefits of dark skies.
